Hiring Process
  • Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

    Heated but does not have air conditioning.

  • What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

    Between 1-2 Service Advisors and 3-4 technicians. We also have a management team that supports employees including our Shop Foreman, HR and Finance Person as well as our Owner.

  • What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

    Monday-Friday 8am-6pm and Saturdays from 8am-3pm. During the busy months technicians will get every other Saturday off and during the slow months we offer 3 day weekends every other weekend.

  • What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

    Each technician is provided a tablet of their own to use as well as access to our Shop Tool Box and specialty tools.

  • What type of break room facility is provided?

    There is a break room with a table/chairs as well as a fridge to keep food and beverages. We also provide company snacks such as nuts, cheese, goldfish, granola bars, beef sticks, water and gatorade.

  • How many bays does your shop have?

    10

  • How many repair orders do you average per month?

    Repair Orders average between 200-350.

  • What is your parts ordering process?

    Once vehicle is diagnosed our Service team members locate the part from one of our local vendors. Delivery time on parts is usually within 30 minutes.

  • What is your policy on side work?

    We do not allow side work to be completed on company grounds. Employees are able to work on their own personal vehicles outside of work hours.

  • Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

    Small business so co-workers feel like family. State of the Art Equipment (Tire machine, Alignment Rack, Scan Tools).

  • Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

    We provide all technicians 45 hours of paid training time per year as well as pay for the cost of training and travel.

  • Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

    We are a multi location business so the opportunities are endless as we continue to grow our organization. It is our hope that lube technicians have the ability to turn into Master ASE Technicians or a Shop Foreman if that is their individual goal.

  • Can you describe your performance review process?

    We provide a performance review after 30, 60 and 90 days and then at 6 months and 1 year and then every 6 months after that. During these reviews the manager of the facility as well as the owner works with the employee on their strengths and weaknesses. We set goals for the next 6 months and make sure to follow up on those goals in between reviews.

  • What type of safety training is required?

    Upon hire all technicians will be taught proper safety procedures in the shop.

  • Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

    We have a shop foreman that works with all of our technicians to hit their individual goals. He will set up a career path of which courses to take, tests to pass and study guides/assistance for anything a technician is struggling with. We also offer technicians the chance to work with and learn from our senior technicians at the facility.

  • How does your shop get involved with the local community?

    Our shops are very involved with the local community. We participate and sponsor numerous community events each year.

  • Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

    We have participated in some career days at local high schools were our current technicians go to the school, talk about their career and why it might be a good choice for some students. We offer all our employees 9 hours of volunteer pay each year that can be used for events like this.

  • Where do you see the shop in five years?

    Our organization is growing quickly with us adding a minimum of 1-2 locations per year. We are currently at 7 but in the next 5 years could be at 15.

  • Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

    Our owner has created a technician career path where each technician is able to increase their pay by following their career plan and continuing to gain more certifications. Each certifications provides a pay increase.

  • Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

    We have a standard application form that is available online at thedetroitgarage.com or individuals may fill out a paper application at any of our locations.

  • Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

    Each situation is different when resumes are submitted online we generally have someone reach out to the candidate and provide a phone interview to make sure we are a good fit.

  • What do your in-person interviews entail?

    Candidate comes into one of our facilities, receives a tour of the location and learns about us as an organization. Fills out some paperwork and has a chance to sit down and talk with our owner and other key staff members of the organization.

  • Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

    We do perform background checks and the right to perform drug screenings.

  • Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

    If a technician has ASE certifications there are no assessments required. If no ASEs present we provide some multiple choice assessments to get a better understanding of the candidate's knowledge. there is not a specific score that is needed in order to be offered a position.

  • After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

    It is our goal to notify an applicant within a few days if we will be offering them a position or if it is not a good fit at this time.

  • Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

    Ideally the whole process would be completed within a week.

  • Is there anything else you’d like to mention about your hiring process?

    We spend a considerable amount of time recruiting and interviewing candidates to make sure we are a good fit for them and that they will hopefully retire within our organization.

  • A Level Technician
    Pay Range: $83,690 - $145,407/year

    Flat Rate for individual hours billed ranging due to ASE certs from $30 to $37 (Approx 80% of pay) *Note that all pay plans estimated off of 45 hour work week & 100% - 140% Productivity. Team Pay for every hour turned in the shop (including your own) (Approx 10% of pay) Productivity Bonus starting at 89% productivity up to 140% productivity (Approx 10% of pay) Everyone in the company is on a performance based compensation plan that rewards them for the efforts and value that they bring to the company. All Employees have a substantial earnings based on the entire shop performance. The idea is the better we do as a team the better we all do together. Minimum Hourly guarantees available for the right candidates.

  • B Level Technician
    Pay Range: $60,000 - $80,000/year

    Flat Rate for individual hours billed ranging due to ASE certs from $22 to $29 (Approx 80% of pay) *Note that all pay plans estimated off of 45 hour work week & 100% - 140% Productivity. Team Pay for every hour turned in the shop (including your own) (Approx 10% of pay) Productivity Bonus starting at 89% productivity up to 140% productivity (Approx 10% of pay) Everyone in the company is on a performance based compensation plan that rewards them for the efforts and value that they bring to the company. All Employees have a substantial earnings based on the entire shop performance. The idea is the better we do as a team the better we all do together. Minimum Hourly guarantees available for the right candidates.

  • C Level Technician
    Pay Range: $30,000 - $59,000/year

    Flat Rate for individual hours billed ranging due to ASE certs from $18 to $21 (Approx 80% of pay) *Note that all pay plans estimated off of 45 hour work week & 100% - 140% Productivity. Team Pay for every hour turned in the shop (including your own) (Approx 10% of pay) Productivity Bonus starting at 89% productivity up to 140% productivity (Approx 10% of pay) Everyone in the company is on a performance based compensation plan that rewards them for the efforts and value that they bring to the company. All Employees have a substantial earnings based on the entire shop performance. The idea is the better we do as a team the better we all do together. Minimum Hourly guarantees available for the right candidates.

  • Lube Technician
    Pay Range: $28,000 - $46,800/year

    Lube Techs are paid off of a hybrid plan that consists of Hourly, OT, Flat Rate Hours and Productivity. ($12 an hour, $18 for OT, $6 per Flat Rate Hour, .25 per Team Hour, Productivity Bonus) -Guaranteed minimum that is based off individual’s skills.

  • Service Advisor
    Pay Range: $50,000 - $100,000/year

    Guaranteed minimum hourly rate in the event that commission is low. Pay plan is 10% of individual gross profit,.75 per Team Hour, Productivity and CSI Score bonuses.
