What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

Team sized will average around 50 people. Within that team you can count on having not only peers but supervisors and support teammates.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Shop is open 7am-7pm Monday- Thursday, 7am-6pm on Fridays and 7am-5pm on Saturdays, Closed Sunday. Shifts are scheduled as a 8 hour shift, and if a teammate is scheduled a Saturday we ask them to take a extra day off during the week.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Smart Motors provides everything outside of the basic mechanic tool set that a technician would own. We pride ourselves in keeping up with technology, and are always evolving to put the best tools in our technicians hands.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Break rooms allow for an "out of work environment" to prepare meals, relax, and have beverages and snacks readily available.

How many bays does your shop have?

Smart Motors has 4 repair facilities on the campus. In total, there is 78 bays.

How many repair orders do you average per month?

5,800

What is your parts ordering process?

We employ many parts professionals to meet our demand. We have designated parts counter personnel to assist technicians as well as a separate retail space. Using all the latest parts ordering software we typically source parts same day with delivery of manufacturer parts every morning before business hours to allow order filling and help technician efficiency. We also have many parts delivery drivers on staff to assist in the retrieval of parts. For technicians, we use a computer based request through our dealership management system for ordering parts. On the reception of parts side, Smart Motors also employs parts personnel to deliver parts to bays, to encourage efficiencies of technicians.

What is your policy on side work?

We allow employees to utilize our repair facility outside of business hours for working on cars for their friends and family.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Process driven to keep technicians busy. Many hours available every day as a result of our high volume. Very supportive dealer with everyone in one building to support teammates every day.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Paid training and testing for ASE Certification and Toyota Training

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Growth can be found financially and title in Smart Motors. We have a clear career path for technicians that allow goals and objectives to be set up front. We also value technicians knowledge as they are useful in jobs outside of being a technician.

Can you describe your performance review process?

We do performance reviews annually. We do offer continuous feedback through communication so expectations of the employer and teammate are always understood on both sides.

What type of safety training is required?

Safety training starts by following guidelines in our employee handbook for a safe work environment. From there, we offer safety training on vehicle specific repairs, as well as AED, CPR and First Aid. We utilize a 3rd party company to assist Smart Motors in identifying safety concerns, and correcting them to keep our employees safe.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Often times we will cross train technicians with a tenured tech in our main shop. This can be a one on one assistance, or we station a younger tech next to a senior tech, allowing for good communication and hands on assistance of learning.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We are very involved in the community. Smart Motors consistently contributes projects and equipment to Madison College and many local high schools. We fund raise and donate to many charities in local communities as well.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Smart Motors attends job fairs often in the local community. Additionally Smart Motors allows high school visits, participates in high school mock interviews, and is eager to assist in any other questions a high school student may have about pursuing a career in automotive. Furthermore, Smart Motors is committed to the success of students in the automotive field, so much so, we offer tools to students at no charge to allow them to jump start their careers.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

Larger servicing all makes and model while becoming a one stop shop for anything and everything automotive.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about career development and community?

Our career path is revolutionary in the sense that it leaves nothing to question. An entry level tech could begin their career at Smart Motors and on day 1 know what is expected and required of them to reach their goals in this industry. Along the way, the path is fully supported by Smart Motors.

Yes, Typically 3-8 Minutes.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes, Our HR team will get in touch to ask some initial questions. More technical questions regarding a job duty are discussed in a formal interview setting.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

Will likely include the department manager, along with the Service and Parts Director or HR representative.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Yes, we do perform drug screening and background check as a term of hire.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No, our interview process and questions are how we determine assumed knowledge of an applicants skills.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Offers can be made as quickly as same day. The most wait we would have would be 48 hours.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

Offers being same day, the process could take as short as 3-4 days awaiting drug screening or background check, or if the applicant has a prior commitment of employment, we would wait for that to expire.

Is there anything else you’d like to mention about your hiring process?

Due to the diverse skills of our managers, applicant could be invited to interview within one day of application.

B Level Technician Pay Range: $50,000.00 - $65,000.00/year

Compensation level reflects a technician who is ASE Master Certified and holds all applicable Toyota Expert Certification.

A Level Technician Pay Range: $70,000.00 - $100,000.00/year

Compensation level reflects a tenured technician who is ASE Master Certified and hold all applicable Toyota Master Certification .

C Level Technician Pay Range: $36,000.00 - $60,000.00/year

Compensation level reflects a technician who is ASE Certified in A4 Steering and Suspension and A5 Brakes, while holding a current Toyota Expert Certification.

Service Advisor Pay Range: $50,000.00 - $90,000.00/year

Express and Maintenance Service Adviser Role Pay Range $32,000-$50,000 Main Shop Repair Service Adviser Role Pay Range $50,000-$90,000

Lube Technician Pay Range: $25,000.00 - $32,000.00/year
