Smart Honda is a large Honda dealership located in Des Moines, Iowa. We have an extensive service team and are currently expanding to 44 service bays! We are looking for quality technicians to join our growing team in our brand new, state-of-the-art service department.

  • Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

    We have an online application, and it typically takes from 6 to 9 minutes to complete depending on typing speed

  • Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

    Sometimes we phone screen or we utilize video interviews

  • What do your in-person interviews entail?

    A history of our Company, show and tell of our DMS and Inspection tools, overview of our Technician programs.

  • Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

    We perform background checks along with a personalty assessment through Wonscore by Wonderlic. No pre-employment drug screening.

  • Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

    No

  • After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

    1 to 2 days

    Both heated and air-conditioned!

  • What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

    30 fellow team members

  • What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

    Shop hours: 7-7 Monday-Thursday 7-6 Friday 7-5 Saturday. Estimated schedule: 7:30-5:00 4 days a week, 9:30-7:00 one day a week and every 3rd Saturday.

  • What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

    Diagnostic and all Honda special tools along with tire machines and alignment machines.

  • What type of break room facility is provided?

    Brand-new lunchroom with microwaves and televisions

  • How many bays does your shop have?

    33, currently expanding to 44

  • How many repair orders do you average per month?

    2500 Customer Pay and Warranty

  • What is your parts ordering process?

    Parts are ordered electronically through Xtime.

  • What is your policy on side work?

    We would prefer not to have to compete against our employees for business

  • Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

    Newly remodeled facility, monthly contests, yearly bonus program, paid factory training, NCAA style technician locker-room

    Honda Factory Certification Training

    We have clearly defined Technician progression map based on skill level and training completion, we encourage our employees to apply for in house positions.

  • Can you describe your performance review process?

    Technician performance is based on hours turned, quality of work and training.

  • What type of safety training is required?

    We have an outside company that provides all of our safety training, it is done in person as well as online.

  • Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

    We have new techs shadow one of our master techs for a defined timeframe based on their skill level, The master tech will tech them the basics of where to locate vehicles, how to operate equipment, the computer system and our inspection process.

  • How does your shop get involved with the local community?

    We are active as a Dealership not just the shop. We have built playgrounds, food bank drives, multiple area sponsorship programs for events.

  • Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

    We are a support of the Automotive Program at DMACC.

  • Where do you see the shop in five years?

    At the rate or business is growing we will have a 2nd shift within the next 5 years.

    Giving back to the community we serve is one of the foundational pillars on which we have built our company and which we continue to grow. ‘Driven to Give’ was designed for this reason; to help encompass all the ways we give back to our communities.     Pay Range: $50,000 - $110,000/year

    Compensation range is estimated by skill level, certification status, hours booked, bonuses, trip incentives, etc.

  • B Level Technician
    Pay Range: $40,000 - $50,000/year

    Compensation range is estimated by skill level, certification status, hours booked, bonuses, trip incentives, etc.

  • C Level Technician
    Pay Range: $30,000 - $40,000/year

    Compensation range is estimated by skill level, certification status, hours booked, bonuses, trip incentives, etc.

  • Lube Technician
    Pay Range: $25,000 - $30,000/year

    Compensation range is determined by skill level, certification status, hours booked, bonuses, trip incentives, etc.

  • Service Advisor
    Pay Range: $45,000 - $125,000/year

    Production based pay plan, set your own pay by your performance.

  • Student Tech / Apprentice
    Pay Range: $15,000 - $25,000/hour

    Will be determined by available schedule and skill set.

  • Collision Technician - A Level
    Pay Range: $50,000 - $110,000/year

    Compensation range is estimated by skill level, certification status, hours booked, bonuses, trip incentives, etc.

  • Collision Technician - B Level
    Pay Range: $35,000 - $55,000/year

    Compensation range is estimated by skill level, certification status, hours booked, bonuses, trip incentives, etc.

  • Collision Painter
    Pay Range: $50,000 - $110,000/year

    Compensation range is estimated by skill level, certification status, hours booked, bonuses, trip incentives, etc.

  • Collision Prepper
    Pay Range: $25,000 - $35,000/year

    Compensation range is estimated by skill level, certification status, hours booked, bonuses, trip incentives, etc.
