About Us

Jimmy and Jean Harlan have owned and operated Sierra Service Center since 1995. We provide a full range of services from oil changes, to scheduled maintenance, to towing service, to radiator service, to major tune ups and repairs. We work on all vehicles covering Asian, European, and of course domestic. Sierra Service Center is a "mom and pop" operation with individualized attention. When you need to discuss problems with your vehicle customers can talk directly to Jimmy, an ASE Certified Service Consultant, and get straight talk and immediate answers. No corporate ladders to climb. Jimmy is a veteran and therefore places a great deal of effort in serving our soldiers and retired veterans. We service customers from the surrounding areas as well including Bisbee, Tombstone, Huachuca City and Benson. If you permit us, we would like to toot our own horn for a minute. We have several accolades which all point to one word: Excellence. Yes we have been in business for well over 26 years but that alone is not enough. We are a NAPA AutoCare Center which means we offer a three year, 36,000 mile nationwide warranty on all parts and labor honored at any of the more than 5,000 NAPA AutoCare Centers across the United States. We are also an Alumni of the Automotive Training Institute and actively continue our professional development within the industry. Our professional credentials are unique to Cochise county. Sierra Service Center is the only automotive repair facility having achieved the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence Recognized Business designation twelve years in a row. This means we employ only ASE Certified professionals who must meet standards by upgrading their certifications in areas in which they specialize. Our Service Consultants and Technicians all go through this process. No other shop in Cochise county can make this statement. Then there is the Automobile Association of America or AAA. The selection and approval process for AAA certification is very thorough and includes surprise inspections, review of credentials (ASE Certifications), customer satisfaction index ratings, A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau, cleanliness of facility including restrooms, waiting area, and shop, and interviewing management for future plans and improvements. Well, Sierra Service Center has met all of those criteria. BUT WAIT! Not only have we met those criteria which designate the best repair facilities in the state, AAA has an additional layer of excellence to designate certain shops as Top Shop Award Winners. We are proud to have received this very special status for four years in a row. No other shop in Cochise county has ever achieved Top Shop Award Winner status. We are ranked as the best of the best. Toot, Toot! Sierra Vista, Arizona is a high desert community. Weather is comfortable and well tolerable year round, clean air, low crime rates, and a community which attracts folks from all walks of life both for career development as well as retirement. We are next to Ft. Huachuca, which is primarily a training and high tech development center for the United States Army. Bisbee, Tombstone, and Kartchner Caverns are also close by and offer Shopping, dining, tours, and etc. Generally a low cost of living index makes Sierra Vista a great place to live. We are tucked in the southeast corner of Arizona at about 4,600 feet elevation.

Hiring Process
  • Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

A generic application form is required to be completed and signed by all applicants as a starting point for interviews. Typically the form should be completed in twenty minutes but perhaps longer for more senior applicants.

  • Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

If the candidate is local we prefer to go directly to an in-person interview. If geographically not possible, we will start with telephonic communication.

  • What do your in-person interviews entail?

We view interviews as a two way street. Not only should applicants win points with us, we need to pass muster for the applicants as well. Interviews are very informal and give both parties a chance to get to know one another.

  • Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

We and our insurance company require drug screening, and background checks on all candidates.

  • Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

We interview candidates with detailed depth of knowledge questions. Candidates are made aware of the 90 day probationary period and the job review procedures before employment is offered.

  • After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Depending on the number of candidates responding we like to keep the process limited to two weeks.

  • Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

    Within two weeks.

  • Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Sierra Vista has a relatively mild seasonal swing, being high desert. Evaporative coolers are available in each bay for hot summer days and portable "torpedo" type heaters are available for cooler winter days.

  • What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

Our complement of staff includes two service consultants, one service manager, three technicians and a senior mentor technician.

  • What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Presently shop hours are from 7:30am until 5:00pm Monday thru Friday and 8:00am until 4:00pm on Saturdays. Technicians work five days per week although we are staffing to change the work schedule to a four day work week. We are not there yet but our goal is to give each technician three days off per week.

  • What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

All BG fluid exchange tools (Transmission, brake fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, automated fuel and air induction and GDI service equip), A/C Machines (r-134a and 1234yf), Autel and Launch scan tools, OE scan tools for Ford, Chrysler, and GM, OPUS RAP programming tools, smoke leak detection, remote chassis ear set, mighty vac, etc.

  • What type of break room facility is provided?

Breaks can be taken in the heated and airconditioned Sierra Service Center Training Facility. Kurig Coffee machine available for fresh coffee and a snack table with various goodies always available at no charge for Sierra Service Center staff. Bottled water is available as well.

  • How many bays does your shop have?

Six lifts with four work bays. Lifts include two full height Nussbaum hydraulic scissors lifts.

  • How many repair orders do you average per month?

    120 is about average.

  • What is your parts ordering process?

Service Consultants order parts sold as recommended by the technicians

  • What is your policy on side work?

We discourage side work. Down time should be spent with family.

  • Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Sierra Service Center encourages ASE Certification. We have a separate training facility with a 70" monitor for technicians to use during down time. We subscribe to Motor Age Connect for training leading up to a give ASE Certification test. All technicians are incremented with each test successfully passed providing certification remains current.

  • Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Sierra Service Center has a separate training facility for technicians to use during down time. We support ASE Certification and increment $1.00 per hour per test passed and kept current at all tier levels. Our training facility is air conditioned in the summer and heated in the winter and includes Motor Age Connect subscription to study of ASE Certification tests.

  • Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

ASE Certification will give automatic pay raises for all flat rate technicians. Advancement from one level to another (C to B; B to A) will also provide increment opportunities.

  • Can you describe your performance review process?

Bi weekly reviews are performed. These can be performed at weekly staff meetings where information is exchanged. If repeated negative reviews are happening these are always done one on one to encourage improvement.

  • What type of safety training is required?

Weekly staff meetings cover any safety issues. Safety is always the first item on the agenda and requires outspoken participation. Vendors providing equipment are required to train technicians on equipment safety.

  • Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

Sierra Service Center employs a senior ASE Master Technician with Advanced Level one credentials to mentor all technicians.

Sierra Service Center sponsors a local pop warner football team.

  • Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We are in contact with the Cochise College auto training program personnel. Presently we have one auto technician who is enrolled in the program and one Service Consultant trainee who is also enrolled in the program.

  • Where do you see the shop in five years?

Sierra Service Center has been growing for the past five years and is heading towards seven figure sales this year. The management function of the facility (which is owned, not leased) is changing to the next generation and is poised for additional growth. Planning is already in process as the paradigm shifts due to ADAS systems and EVs. Capital is available for equipment upgrades as well as training of staff.
