  • What is your parts ordering process?

For work in progress - see service manager or service writer to get a PO made and sent for various items.

  • What is your policy on side work?

We don't specifically monitor that unless it adversely affects the company.

  • Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

We have a food truck show up every day at 10am, he offers a line of credit after being here a while. The tool trucks show up here weekly - all the major players: Snapon, Cornwell, Matco, Mac. Overall, we are a small and really collaborative team. If you like to stay in your lane and work alone, you may not love our work environment. We always help each other, even if it's outside of our normal work. Examples: Parts counter team helps spray bedliner. Our shop supervisor helps write estimates. Our service manager will turn a wrench and get dirty. Operations manager will unload deliveries in the warehouse as needed. Inside sales will drive to pick up parts when needed. But that makes it a really tight-knit group that cares for each other and the customer.

  • Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Yes - we offer in-house training from our senior techs as well as training opportunities online and with our vendor partners.

  • Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

We are a small company and opportunities for upward growth don't come often but when they do, we try to promote from within first. We always want to further develop people in each of their roles, so learning is always happening.

  • Can you describe your performance review process?

At 90 days, we do a performance review with an opportunity for a raise if warranted. After that, an annual review (or if your skill set changes dramatically - you start installing plows at a good pace after never having done them.. etc). There is a bit of paperwork your supervisor will fill out and sit down with you, and one other manager, to go over highlights of your performance as well as areas for improvement. It's a two-way conversation so leadership listens as much as they share.

  • What type of safety training is required?

We have trainings on our specialty equipment and our fall protection.

  • Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

As mentioned, we are very collaborative. Senior techs get asked every question under the sun and they respond kindly and promptly with an answer or instructions on the job. They will stay with you until you feel confident about the process. The shop supervisor is also a working tech and is always willing to answer questions.

  • How does your shop get involved with the local community?

Our president is very involved with many community programs. We also participate in Hire-A-Vet and put on our annual Plow Clinic where we offer free oil changes to Fisher plows in October.

  • Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

We have partnered with our local colleges and technical schools in the past. We are working to open training between Messer and a local community college.

  • Where do you see the shop in five years?

Growing to offer more to our customer base and the work truck industry as a whole.

  • Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Yes we have paper and online applications on our website. Paper takes about 10 minutes and online takes about 5 minutes.

  • Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes, phone interviews are schedule as soon as possible after candidates apply. They're usually about 20 minutes.

  • What do your in-person interviews entail?

It starts with a shop tour with the operations manager then the candidate is paired one on one with our service manager, then shop supervisor then 2-3 techs who each spend about 5-10 mins with you to get to know you. The team interviews you to make sure you will fit our culture. If you are applying to weld for us, we will have you bring your own hood and run some beads. Typically about 1 hour-1.5 hours with weld test.

  • Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

Drug screening and a basic physical fitness test at Bayside Employee Health in Portland Maine.

  • Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

Not specifically. You will be asked technical questions throughout the interview.

  • After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

    One week or less.

  • Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

    Two weeks or less.

  • Is there anything else you’d like to mention about your hiring process?

We do a group interview process. Our culture is very important to us. We have the team meet candidates and help in the hiring process to make sure we're getting top-notch individuals who can work hard and have fun while doing it.
