About Us

First Transit is a leader in fixed-route, paratransit, shuttle bus and fleet maintenance services. Our shop in Phoenix, AZ services City of Phoenix's fleet of primarily CNG Cummins and Diesel Cummins engines on New Flyer and Gillig transit buses. The fleet is made up of buses from 30 foot to 60 ft chassis’. Our shop's are completely paperless utilizing iPads for work orders. Shops are heated and air-conditioned. Specialty tools and diagnostic systems are provided. Training and testing for ASEs are provided and paid for. In-house maintenance trainer and 40 hours of training are paid yearly. Unlimited on the job training available!

  • Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

    The shop is heated and air conditioned.

  • What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

    Team of 28 Technicians, 18 Fleet Care Employees.

  • What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

    24/7 Shop hours. The majority of our shifts are 4 – 10s and either Sunday thru Wednesday or Wednesday thru Saturday. There are 3 shifts 06:00 – 16:30 14:00 – 00:30 20:00 – 06:30

  • What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

    Diagnostic equipment, specialty tools

  • What type of break room facility is provided?

    Break room, Locker room, Showers

  • How many bays does your shop have?

    22 Bays

  • How many repair orders do you average per month?

    Around 900 repair orders a month.

  • What is your parts ordering process?

    In-House parts department. Parts Clerk handles ordering and pulling.

  • What is your policy on side work?

    No issues. As long as it doesn't interfere with daily work and not on property.

  • Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

    Very clean shop!

  • Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

    40 hours of training is provided a year. Unlimited opportunity for additional on the job training. ASE training and testing materials are paid for and provided.

  • Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

    Many of our managers and leadership were once technicians themselves. There's plenty of room for career growth for the right individual.

  • Can you describe your performance review process?

    Daily review process on the tech receipts.

  • What type of safety training is required?

    Safety training is provided. Nothing is required coming in.

  • Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

    All new techs receive 6 months of mentorship/training.

  • How does your shop get involved with the local community?

    Partnerships with UTI.

  • Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

  • Where do you see the shop in five years?

    Still up and running!

  • Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

    Yes, we have an online application that can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes to complete. We are a DOT employer so the application may seem a little lengthy, but we are always happy to assist. You can even complete the application on a computer in our shop.

  • Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

    A manager may ask you a few questions over the phone when they schedule you for an interview, but most questions are saved for the in-person interview.

  • What do your in-person interviews entail?

    You will meet face-to-face with our Maintenance Manager who will ask you questions from a structured interview guide. Interviews take at least 30 minutes to complete.

  • Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

    We do have a background check and drug screening process once you accept a job offer.

  • Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

    No skills assessments are performed.

  • After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

    You should hear back within a few days of your interview. If you are still waiting on an answer after a week, call or email the manager and they will follow up with you.

  • Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

    Depending on where the manager is with reviewing and interviewing candidates, it should take about one week from the time you submit an application to the time a hiring decision is made.

  • A Level Technician
    Pay Range: $52,000 - $64,480/year ($25.00 - $31.00/hr)

    Opportunity for overtime available! ASE hourly wage increase! $150/yr boot allowance! $200 - $550/yr tool allowance! Uniforms are provided!

  • B Level Technician
    Pay Range: $45,760 - $56,160/year ($22.00 - $27.00/hr)

    Opportunity for overtime available! ASE hourly wage increase! $150/yr boot allowance! $150 - $350/yr tool allowance! Uniforms are provided!

  • C Level Technician
    Pay Range: $41,600 - $49,920/year ($20.00 - $24.00/hr)

  • Lot Attendant
    Pay Range: $33,217 - $41,828/year ($15.97 - $20.11/hr)

Health Insurance Offered First Transit offers three affordable health plans from United Heath Care that included Medical and Pharmacy care. We offer Yellow, Blue, and Green plans which offer your affordability and different price points while offering comprehensive medical coverage.
Dental Insurance Offered First Transit offers two affordable dental plans from Cigna Dental. You may choose from Cigna Dental HMO or a PPO plan.
Vision Insurance Offered First Transit offers two affordable vision plans from VSP. You may choose from the Choice Plan or the Choice Premium Plan. Both plans cover a full array of eyeglasses/frames or contact lenses
Retirement Plan Offered First Transit offers a 401(k) plan with Principal. You may save from 1% to 50% of your earnings as Pre-Tax Savings Contributions or Roth Post-Tax Contributions. Rollovers from prior qualified plans are allowed. Certain limits apply if you are a Highly Compensated Employee. Special catch-up contributions are available if you are age 50 or older during the plan year. Contributions are subject to certain IRS limits. Match: After 1 year of employment; the company will match 50% on the first 6% of your contributions. You are always vested in your own contributions. The company contribution vesting schedule is as follows: After 1 year of service = 33%; After 2 years of service = 67%; After 3 years of service = 100% Withdrawals and Loans are available under the plan.

ST / LT Disability Offered First Transit offers both voluntary both Short-Term and Long-Term disability to all employees. The employee-paid option of 70% of your weekly earnings, with no maximum benefit, is available through Lincoln Financial for Short-Term. The Employee-paid options of 40%, 50%, 60% of salary, up to a monthly benefit of $12,000 are available through Lincoln Financial Long-Term.
Life Insurance Offered Employee-paid life insurance options are available for employee, spouse, and children through Lincoln Financial. Dependent coverage is limited to 50% of the employee voluntary election amount.
