Our shop in Newark, New Jersey services New Jersey Transit's Access Link's fleet of primarily Ford E-350 cutaways, Chevy Caprice, and Toyota Camry Hybrids. The fleet primarily is made up of buses from 25-foot cutaways. Our shops are completely paperless utilizing tablets for work orders. Shops are heated and provide a safe work environment. Specialty tools and diagnostic systems are provided. Training and testing for ASEs are provided and paid for. 40 hours of training are paid yearly.

  • Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

    This First Transit shop is heated only.

  • What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

    This First Transit shop has a total of 9 technicians across three shifts on the weekdays and two shifts on the weekends.

  • What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

    This First Transit shop operates 24-hours a day and 365 days of the year. Shift times are 5:00 am - 1:30 pm, 2nd shift is 3:30 pm - 12:00 am, 3rd shift 8:00 pm - 4:30 am with a set days off each shift.

  • What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

    We have computer testing equipment, specialty testing equipment, torque wrenches, and wheel/tire machines for small tires.

  • What type of break room facility is provided?

    This shop has a small break room that can hold roughly 10 people, vending machines, a coffee maker, microwave, refrigerator, and TV.

  • How many bays does your shop have?

    This First Transit Shop has 8 bays.

  • How many repair orders do you average per month?

    This First Transit shop averages 150 - 200 repair orders per month.

  • What is your parts ordering process?

    We have a parts warehouse with multiple parts clerks that assist in obtaining needed parts we may not have on hand.

  • What is your policy on side work?

    First Transit does not allow side work in the shops at any location.

  • Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

    We have our own in-house training and each technician will receive at least 40 hours of training annually. We offer ASE training and testing to all of our technicians at no cost to them. Also, we have in-person OEM training, and Firstgroup Tech College offers hundreds of hours of tech knowledge and quizzes with new courses added weekly.

    Many of our managers and leadership were once technicians themselves.

  • Can you describe your performance review process?

    Reviews are performed annually and are based on ASE obtained, noted skill advancement, and diagnostic accuracy.

  • What type of safety training is required?

    This location requires lockout tag-out, PPE, lift usage, monthly safety meetings, and daily safety message.

  • Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

    At this First Transit location, our more senior technicians will shadow the lesser experience techs and guide them through the diagnostic and problem-solving processes to make accurate repairs.

  • How does your shop get involved with the local community?

    This shop does attend community events.

  • Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

    First Transit does partner with local technical schools.

  • Where do you see the shop in five years?

    This location is working hard to be one cohesive unit with all of its various departments and will soon be one of the top shops in the company. We also accel to achieve ASE Certifications for all of our techs.

  • Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

    Yes, we have an online application that can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes to complete. We are a DOT employer so the application may seem a little lengthy, but we are always happy to assist. You can even complete the application on a computer in our shop.

  • Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

    A manager may ask you a few questions over the phone when they schedule you for an interview, but most questions are saved for the in-person interview.

  • What do your in-person interviews entail?

    You will meet face-to-face with our Maintenance Manager who will ask you questions from a structured interview guide. Interviews take at least 30 minutes to complete.

  • Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

    We do have a background check and drug screening process once you accept a job offer.

  • Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

    No skills assessments are performed.

  • After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

    You should hear back within a few days of your interview. If you are still waiting on an answer after a week, call or email the manager and they will follow up with you.

  • Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

    Depending on where the manager is with reviewing and interviewing candidates, it should take about one week from the time you submit an application to the time a hiring decision is made.

  • Parts Clerk
    Pay Range: $14 - $16/hour

  • Lot Attendant
    Pay Range: $0 - $14/hour

Dental Insurance Offered First Transit offers two affordable dental plans from Cigna Dental. You may choose from Cigna Dental HMO or a PPO plan.
Vision Insurance Offered First Transit offers two affordable dental plans from VSP. You may choose from the Choice Plan or the Choice Premium Plan. Both plans cover a full array of eyeglasses/frames or contact lenses
Retirement Plan Offered First Transit offers a 401(k) plan with Principal. You may save from 1% to 50% of your earnings as Pre-Tax Savings Contributions or Roth Post-Tax Contributions. Rollovers from prior qualified plans are allowed. Certain limits apply if you are a Highly Compensated Employee. Special catch-up contributions are available if you are age 50 or older during the plan year. Contributions are subject to certain IRS limits. Match: After 1 year of employment; the company will match 50% on the first 6% of your contributions. You are always vested in your own contributions. ST / LT Disability Offered First Transit offers both voluntary both Short-Term and Long-Term disability to all employees. The employee-paid option of 70% of your weekly earnings, with no maximum benefit, is available through Lincoln Financial for Short-Term. The Employee-paid options of 40%, 50%, 60% of salary, up to a monthly benefit of $12,000 are available through Lincoln Financial Long-Term.
