What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

8:00am.-4:30pm. (Monday-Friday) 8:00am.-12:00pm. (Saturday) This shift is for technicians who are productive and consistent.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Any specialty tools, and all major tools will be provided. Tech will only need to provide basic hand tools and we will provide the rest.

What type of break room facility is provided?

Fridge, microwave, table, chairs, coffee maker, TV, bottled water provided, pop machine available, outside area to eat and lounge as well.

How many bays does your shop have?

Technically 7 bays 2 60 foot bays 1 lift bay 1 Chassis dyno bay

How many repair orders do you average per month?

300

What is your parts ordering process?

Technician makes a list of the parts needed and then drops off the order to the parts counter. The warehouse/parts specialist will pull the parts needed, and if a major part is on the ticket it will get approved by the owner or service manager. 75% of parts are exchanged, the other 25% is repaired and sent back to customer. Turnaround goal is a couple of days.

What is your policy on side work?

Work on family vehicles is allowed. If there is a grey area it must be approved by the owner.

Are there any other unique features of the work environment worth noting?

Fuel shop techs will only need a couple thousand dollars worth of tools. This is a minimal cost compared to other shops and positions.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Continued education is always encouraged. We promote in-shop hands on training, online training, seminars and education classes. Upon completion of these trainings technicians will be reimbursed. We also are always opened to other training options and ideas.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

Career paths and goals are discussed with the technician during the hiring process, and throughout their career with us. We will help techs hit their goals the best that we can with the positions we have available.

Can you describe your performance review process?

90 run day review for new hires discussing their productivity and how things are going in the shop. Depending how the candidate is performing a raise may happen at that time or at the six month review. We conduct annual reviews after that. Tech will evaluate their selves and their performance, and we will use that form and and evaluate the answers given. We also discuss their likes and dislikes in the shop, and is there anything we should look at changing.

What type of safety training is required?

Safety training is ongoing. KPA comes in and does a mock OSHA walk through twice a year. They also provide sit down training in the shop. We participate in Right-To-Know online training once a year. We also provide in-shop training throughout the year.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

We have 3 technicians that we use for mentoring. They will be paired up with junior techs for the first three months of employment. They will help with repairs, and be available for any additional questions.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

We try and take part in everything we can. Currently we are helping with veterans and building a house for them to get away. We also give to our local homeless shelters, the salvation army, and local church donations through Knights of Columbus.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

Our owner was on the board at the local tech. college, but the program was cut. We do participate in senior programs where students will come and work for a couple of hours to gain work experience, and help build their skill set. We also keep our name available at Siouxland Academy for students that want to come in to a real shop atmosphere.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

We work in a very nitch market with repairing equipment such as old tractors, and other equipment. Because of this we invested in new technology and continue to keep up to date in our industry. We've invested at least a million dollars to keep relevant, and stay current in our industry. Always looking at new technology and different ways to bring in more work. We also look to continue working hard at keeping things legal, and environmentally friendly.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

We provide a paper application that takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. We ask for three references, and three previous jobs if applicable.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

We would rather do an in-person interview if possible. If the technician can't do that first we will make exceptions.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

In-person interviews are done with the Owner, and at times the Service Manager. We use the answers on the job application to lead the interview, and we discuss things like experience, background, certifications, and career goals.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

No.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

If the candidate already has a mechanical background a skills assessment will not be required. If this is the candidates first tech. job we will ask for a light assessment with simple repairs.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Hires can be made immediately depending on the technicians qualifications. If not, a week at the most.

A Level Technician
A Level Technicians are highly skilled technicians that have strengths in their diagnostic and mechanical ability. This level of technician typically has many years of experience and education. We view an A Level Technician as the highest skilled technician in a shop
Pay Range: $51,000.00 - $57,000.00/year

B Level Technician
B Level Technicians are skilled in mechanical repair and, while not their specialty, have some diagnostic skills. B Level Technicians generally have a fair amount of experience and can be trusted to handle most repairs.
Pay Range: $45,000.00 - $51,000.00/year

C Level Technician
C Level Technicians are more of entry level technicians. C Level Technicians’ responsibilities typically include basic maintenance, alignments, brake and suspension work, along with other base level repairs.
Pay Range: $38,000.00 - $43,000.00/year

Student Tech / Apprentice
Student technicians work on entry level tasks while completing their school programs.
Pay Range: $15.00 - $17.00/hour
