Under The Hood

Is the shop heated? Air conditioned?

Our shop is heated. We bring in mobile cooling units during warm weather times if needed and the building is insulated well to limit the influence of the elements year-round.

What is the size of the team I’d be working with?

Our shop is not broken down into individual teams, we operate as one total team. In the next 6-8 months, the team will be 3-4 people. In the next 18 months, the team will likely grow to 8-10 total members.

What are the shop hours and what are the shift timeframes?

Currently, shop hours are 7:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday. Technicians are able to manage their schedules accordingly within those hours. At this time, we are not doing any retail-facing business and don't have any requirement to be available for customers during nights and weekends. Our goal will be to open up customer-facing service in the next 12-18 months and will adjust shop hours accordingly to meet customer needs at that time.

What tools does the shop provide that are available for all technicians to use?

Scanners, A/C equipment, tire machine/balancers, air compressors, strut spring compressor. We are consistently buying new tools to better serve the needs of our technicians as our shop grows and needs arise.

What type of break room facility is provided?

The ClearShift break room is inside the dealership and includes refrigerator and microwave, as well as counter space for food prep and multiple tables.

How many bays does your shop have?

15

How many repair orders do you average per month?

Our expectation is 150-250 per month. Our smaller shop in Highlands Ranch averages 200 and has fewer bays than our Loveland store.

What is your parts ordering process?

Shop Foreman and Service Advisors assist with the acquisition of parts, and how those orders are placed is based on where the part is coming from. Technicians do their diagnostic process and request the Shop Foreman and Service Advisors place the orders that are needed.

What is your policy on side work?

Technicians are currently not permitted to do personal work within ClearShift facilities due to current space limitations. Technicians are welcome to do side work on their own time away from ClearShift as long as it doesn't interfere with their working schedule.

Do you offer any skills training or continuing education opportunities?

Technicians who are interested in pursuing training and certifications, including recertifications will have the support of the organization. In many cases, ClearShift is able to financially support Technicians in these efforts but those situations are handled on a case-by-case basis. On the job, our team setup and structure for Technicians is designed to 'home grow' talent and see Lube Techs be given the opportunity to grow to C Techs, and so on. We want to have Technicians on our team that are excited to grow and we want to facilitate that growth within the culture of the shop.

Can you describe opportunities for career growth at your business?

As a company, we're growing. With growth comes potential and opportunity for employees to expand their skill sets and make advancements in their careers. In a true linear career path, seeing Technicians advance from being a Lube Tech, up to C, B, and A is the most obvious path forward. Currently, our Loveland shop is operating at about 25% of what its full capacity will be and the ability to expand an employee's role as growth continues, add responsibility, and potentially grow into a Shop Foreman is on the horizon in the coming 12-18 months. Beyond that, ClearShift has more stores planned to open in the next few years and that will continue to expand our opportunities for employees to grow with the company.

Can you describe your performance review process?

Employee performance reviews happen quarterly, following an employees first 90 days of employment. During the first 90 days, employees receive 30/60/90 day reviews to track training, initial performance, and overall acclimation to the company, systems, and processes. Quarterly reviews focus on quality of diagnostics, inspections, hours produced, shop cleanliness, and comebacks, along with adherence to company culture and accountability standards.

What type of safety training is required?

Technicians are expected to comply with all OSHA workplace standards and receive training and certifications on the lifts they use.

Can you describe how Techs work with and mentor younger techs?

This is at the core of who we are as a company and how we want to differentiate ourselves from other shops. ClearShift operates in a culture of 'Giving and Receiving'. ClearShift believes that by giving first you impact everybody in a positive way. A Technician working with and mentoring younger Techs is not a suggestion, it's not something we're asking for, it is a requirement. If a Technician is not excited and eager to engage, collaborate, or mentor younger Technicians then this is not the place for them. We operate from a place of humility and want Technicians who are excited to collaborate with everyone in the shop.

How does your shop get involved with the local community?

ClearShift is a faith-based organization and is partnered in various ways with a lot of churches and faith-based organizations. Through those relationships, we have donated time, people, and vehicles to the causes being championed by these organizations and how they are choosing to impact their communities. These opportunities and any future opportunities are something ClearShift is open to continuing to evaluate, develop, and move forward. We are continuously considering and reviewing new opportunities to continue to find ways to give to our communities.

Do you do anything with local high schools or tech schools to encourage more students to enter the profession?

In the spirit of giving first, ClearShift seeks to build relationships with high schools and tech schools to offer knowledge, training, and resources to set students up to be successful in their careers whether it is at ClearShift or somewhere else. In the past, our team has done mock interviews, collaborated with instructors on curriculum, and offered resume prep resources to students. We believe in the proper stewardship of the industry first and want to contribute to that in as many ways as we're able to.

Where do you see the shop in five years?

In the next five years, we believe that we will have the shop operating at the full 100% capacity it has the space to function at, as well as adding customer-facing service and handling retail business and not just reconditioning work.

Do you have an application form and how long does it typically take to complete?

Applications follow the established process of the platform the candidate is applying from, Indeed, Zip Recruiter, etc. In all cases, candidates can use easy-apply options and functionality to apply. There is a follow-up application that is not required but allows candidates to provide more detailed information about their candidacy, which takes 3-5 minutes to complete.

Do you phone screen applicants before doing in-person interviews?

Yes, we complete initial phone interviews with candidates to begin the conversation about who we are as a company and what the candidate is looking for in making a move to a new role. This also allows for easier scheduling as many candidates are currently working and have limited availability to meet in person.

What do your in-person interviews entail?

In-person interviews entail more specific context around ClearShift's needs in the job opening and the candidate's skillsets and ability to potentially meet those needs. We give the candidate a tour of our shop, walk through process details, and have them meet with our Shop Foreman, General Manager, and Director of Fixed Operations. ClearShift believes it's important for the candidate to see themselves being successful in the space as much as we as a hiring team can see that person being successful in the space.

Do you perform background checks, drug screening, or personality tests before hiring an applicant?

ClearShift performs background and MVR checks on all employees. This check happens post-offer acceptance and prior to the candidate's start date. The check includes a 7-year criminal county and national check, and a 7-year motor vehicle check. We will share specifics of disqualifying offenses during the interview process if requested.

Do you perform a skill assessment before hiring an applicant? If yes, what does it entail?

No, we do not perform a skill assessment. Our goal through the interview process is to have conversations with the candidate that allow them the space to demonstrate the knowledge base needed to perform the role. We do have a probationary period beginning on day one of employment that will address any performance concerns if the candidate misrepresents their knowledge and ability during the interview process and is unable to perform at the level/pay rate agreed upon in the offer.

After an in-person interview, approximately how long should I expect to wait for a rejection or an offer?

Time varies based on how many in-person interviews are taking place at that time. The goal is to follow up within 24 hours, but that time could be extended to five days based on interview timing and the ability to effectively evaluate candidates internally after interviews.

Approximately how long does the full hiring process take from submitting the application to the time of the hiring decision?

On average, one to two weeks. Applications are reviewed and responded to within 24 business hours of submission. Total time will vary based on candidate and hiring team availability for interview scheduling as well.
