Our shop is located in Southern California where the climate is temperate. We are 3 miles from the beach which helps keeps us cool in the summer. Our shop has 8 work bays that are open to allow fresh air in. All of the offices and the employee lounge area are air conditioned and on the few days a year it gets hot in SoCal, we encourage Techs and Shop Helpers to take breaks in the A/C. When it's cold (to us Californians), we have space heaters to keep the Technicians warm in their bays.
Our Tech team is currently 4 Techs, but we're in need of that 4th Tech! Our goal is to have 5 Techs. The Technicians are supervised by the Shop Foreman, Steve. Other than the Tech team, we have a Parts Assistant, two Service Advisors, two Office Managers, and three Shop Helpers. With Tony, the owner, that makes us a team of 13.
We're open Monday-Friday 8AM-5PM. We value a work-life balance here and we close up the doors at 5pm. There are rare opportunities for overtime. If needed, we inform the team of ahead of time.
Tablet for digital inspections, OE and Aftermarket Scan tools, factory special tools, A/C machine, 5 gas analyzer, Lab scope, Shop press, power brake bleeder. And more! It's important to us to provided the most up to date tools as possible.
Our Employee Lounge shares space with the Parts Associate in an Air Conditioned room with a fridge, microwave, and toaster oven. We keep the room stocked with snacks, beverages, and fresh coffee.
We have 8 working bays.
We average 60 Repair Orders per month. Most of our Repair Orders are larger jobs, some are long term projects. So our RO count is on the lower side while our ARO Price is higher than average.
The Technician includes parts needed in their estimate after they inspect and diagnose the car. The Parts Associate then creates a written estimate with the correct parts and parts price. Once it's approved, the Parts Associate orders the parts and delivers it to the Tech. We work hard to get parts as soon as possible. Sometimes special parts need to be shipped from Germany which take more time than usual, but the Parts Associate ensures that everyone is aware of ETA.
No side work
We encourage Technicians to help each other, and Shop Helpers first goal is to be helpful to the Technicians. Culture is important to Callas Rennsport, and quality and craftsmanship are our main goals.
Absolutely. Continuing education is a priority at Callas Rennsport. We share opportunities with our Techs whenever available and if our Techs have classes they'd like to attend that are relevant and appropriate, we'll cover the cost and pay the Techs. We have a wealth of resources for learning Porsches. We have an extensive library with labor guides and manuals, we collect any books on working on Porsches that are available and good quality, and Tony, the Owner, is an instructor, as well.
There are levels of mastery through which Callas Rennsport will help Techs advance. We have A, B, C, and Student level Techs that have clear goals on how to advance to the next step, and the next pay rate. If someone has a goal of being a Service Advisor or Manager, we will set up goal posts for that progression as well. We want our team to growth with Callas Rennsport.
A Performance Review Meeting is held with each employee once per year. Usually around their anniversary date. New employees will have a 90 day review and then it will be a yearly review. Performance Reviews are an opportunity to look at accomplishments, areas of improvement, and future goals.
Upon hire, a safety walk-through is done with the Shop Foreman. After that, there are quarterly safety presentations presented at Staff Meeting.
Callas Rennsport is working on developing a mentorship/student program. One of our goals is to improve the industry overall, and we want to train young Techs to hold our high quality standard. Our mentorship/student program will include a Student Tech working with an A-Level Tech to learn and accomplish their goals to become a C-Level Tech.
We participate in events with the local chapter of the Porsche Club of America and often host Tech Sessions educating people on their Porsches and how to be good Porsche owners. We are a member of the Chamber of Commerce and welcome new business to the Torrance Area. We also donate and participate in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Out of the Darkness walks.
We work closely with our local community College, El Camino, to provide support in their program. Tony Callas helped get their Automotive department accredited. We also present at their school to encourage students to apply to be a Shop Helper.
In 5 years, we plan to continue to be the best example of quality craftsmanship on Porsches and BMWs. We will have 5 Techs, a streamlined workflow procedure, and a robust mentorship/student Tech Program. We are also planning on increasing our sales to $3.5 Million in that time and maintain a good profit margin so the company, and the employees, can grow.
Our application only takes about 7 minutes to complete.
We perform a phone screening prior to in-person interview that only takes up to 30 minutes.
We do 2 in-person interviews, unless a third is called for. They will be performed by different team members, but always include the Shop Foreman. There are about 15 questions in the first, with more technical detail. Prior to the interivew we will show the candidate around the shop and introduce them to some team members. The second interview is to get to know the personality of the candidate. Only 5 questions that are not technical, and a conversation is encouraged. In all interviews, the candidate is encouraged to ask questions whenever they'd like.
Background, drug screenings, and personality tests will be used after the interview process.
We invite Technicians to do a few days of an 'working interview' they will be paid to come to the shop for 3 or so days and work on cars under the supervision of the Shop Foreman. This will include inspections, diagnostics, and lunches with the team.
After an in-person interview, the candidate will know if they move on to the next stage in at least two days.
If all goes well and efficiently, it could take two weeks. The candidate can help quicken the process by: being available for interviews, responding quickly, doing the screenings as soon as possible, and alerting references that we will be calling.
Culture is the most important thing at Callas Rennsport. We want everyone to enjoy where they work, current employees and the potential new employee. Therefore, we take great care in our hiring process to get to know you. Some Technical skills can be taught, but attitude and aptitude cannot. We want someone who is in line with our core values so all parties are happy with the decision.
